Wombats SA Photography Competition

Wombats SA is holding our very first photography competition and we invite you to submit a photograph.

Photographers of all ages and abilities are welcome to submit an original photograph showcasing our South Australian wildlife and environment.

All winning entries will be included in a 2019 Calendar, promoted on our website and shown at an Exhibition during SALA Festival 2019.

They will also be uploaded to Wombats SA Facebook account.

Winners and a highly commended will be chosen in two categories:

  1. Open
  2. Alwin Clements Award for Young Photographer – 17 years old and under

Winners will receive a $250 cash prize, a framed print of their photograph and a certificate.
Highly Commended will receive a $100 cash prize, a framed print of their photograph and a certificate.

The Winners’ cash prizes are donated by Bank SA, and Highly Commended are donated by Wombats SA.


How to enter

Email your entry to info@nhssa.com.au

Your entry must include:

  • Your full name
  • Email address
  • Postal address and contact telephone number (age if entering Young Photographer)
  • One high quality digital image, between 1 – 2MB, as a JPEG, PNG or TIFF file, taken by yourself.
  • Reason why you have selected this image (maximum 20 words), and the date and location where the image was taken.

Wombats SA: Judging Panel

Wombats SA is pleased to announce the judging panel for the photography competition.

Dr Peter Clements (President, Wombats SA): Peter Clements PhD, FHGSA.  
Peter has been involved with the Natural History Society of South Australia, now Wombats SA, for most of his life, following in the footsteps of his parents, who were involved in conservation in South Australia. 
He has extensive knowledge of the fauna, flora and environment within the five reserves managed by Wombats SA. 

Glen Taylor (Head Ranger, Wombats SA): Glen Taylor OAM, member and Fellow of the Natural History Society of SA since 1970. Head Ranger since 1993.  He is Editor of the Society publication NATURAL HISTORY, and producer of  a DVD entitled “Moorunde Wildlife Reserve”.
Glen is also a bird photographer with entries in Birds of Australia.

Dr Matt Gaughwin (Clinical Senior Lecturer, Adelaide University): Matt Gaughwin studied the ecology of Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats for his PhD degree in the nineteen seventies and continues to do so.
His work often involves observing and photographing wombats and other wildlife. He enjoys looking at the work of wildlife photographers and appreciates how photographs of and writing about nature can contribute to the protection and conservation of wildlife.


Competition rules, terms and conditions

  1. The competition is open to individuals of all ages and abilities.
  2. Entry into the competition is free.
  3. The subject for the competition is local wildlife and environment. “Local” is defined as within South Australia.
  4. Entrants must not do anything to injure or distress any animals or destroy their habitat in an attempt to secure an image.
    If the organisers suspect that an image has been achieved through the use of cruel or unethical practices, including the use of live bait, the entry will be disqualified and the organisers reserve the right to report the entrant to the applicable authorities.
  5. Entrants must submit one digital image of their work. The image shall be of high quality, between 1mb and 2mb in size and be saved in JPEG, PNG or TIFF format only.
  6. Entries must be digital (electronic) and emailed to info@nhssa.com.au no later than 5pm, Wednesday 19th December 2018.
    No other form of submission, printed hard copy or electronic (such as on CD), will be accepted. Late entries will not be accepted.
  7. Each photographer may submit one work only. 
  8. Wombats SA curatorial team will select finalists’ works for exhibition from the images provided and each finalist shall be notified accordingly.
  9. The photographer warrants that their entry and any other works and materials submitted are original, are the property of the photographer and do not infringe any third-party rights.
    By entering, the photographer further agrees to indemnify and hold Wombats SA and their respective officers, employees, agents, parents, subsidiaries, successors, and assigns,
    harmless from any liability or damages of any kind, including legal fees and costs, resulting from any claim of infringement or other proprietary right of any person or entity.
  10. The entries will be presented anonymously and judged purely on their photographic merit. The judges’ decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  11. Ownership of the work, and the Intellectual Property represented by the work, will vest in the photographer.
    Copyright of the photographer’s work, including but not limited to the design forming part of the work, shall remain the sole property of the photographer.
  12. The photographer will grant Wombats SA an irrevocable license (without payment) to retain and exhibit the work for the duration of exhibitions and any subsequent versions of exhibitions as deemed necessary by Wombats SA.
  13. The photographer will grant Wombats SA an irrevocable license (without payment) to reproduce images of the work, in whole or in part, for promotional and educational purposes.
    Wombats SA will acknowledge the photographer where possible as the author of the work.
  14. The photographer agrees that Wombats SA has an irrevocable license (without payment) to reproduce images of the work, in whole or in part, for the purposes of the Society’s business which may include the production of related merchandise to be sold as promotional material – 100% of the proceeds will support our educational and public programs.
